AN INVESTIGATION OF THE CHALLENGES FACED BY ADOLESCENTS IN KATSINA STATE SECONDARY SCHOOLS
ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to investigate a survey pertaining to the challenges faced by teenagers in Nigerian secondary schools, specifically focusing on secondary schools located in Katsina State. The study specifically investigated the necessity of implementing efficient counselling services in secondary educational institutions. The study additionally investigates the effects of counselling services on adolescent issues within secondary educational institutions. Finally, the study proposes strategies for enhancing counselling services for adolescents in secondary educational institutions.
The research design utilised in this study was a survey-based descriptive approach. A total of 30 survey replies were verified for validity. Based on the collected and analysed replies, the findings indicate that the challenges faced by adolescents in secondary schools in Katsina State include educational disparities stemming from prior primary schooling, substance abuse, interpersonal conflicts with peers, and mental health disorders. The provision of effective counselling services in secondary schools is essential for several reasons.
Firstly, it enables students to cultivate problem-solving abilities, thereby enhancing their capacity to address challenges they encounter. Secondly, counselling addresses the emotional needs of students, ensuring their psychological well-being and promoting a healthy mindset. Additionally, counselling caters to the behavioural requirements of students, assisting them in developing appropriate conduct and social skills. Lastly, counselling endeavours to establish a harmonious and supportive environment that accommodates the diverse needs of students, employing various approaches to facilitate their growth and development. In conclusion, the influence of counselling services on adolescent issues within secondary schools manifests in several ways.
Firstly, counselling facilitates the adoption of appropriate problem-solving strategies among students. Secondly, counselling aids in managing the pressures exerted by peer groups. Thirdly, counselling assists students in navigating the challenges associated with identity development. Lastly, counselling supports students in coping with mood fluctuations.
The study suggests that counsellors and public health professionals should effectively utilise the resources available in the school setting to promote the understanding that the transition from infancy to childhood and from adolescence to adulthood is a normal process that requires dedicated management. Additionally, it is imperative to implement stringent monitoring measures for secondary school students in order to mitigate their involvement in substance misuse and various other forms of misconduct.
